Biography
Tony Harris was born in Bridgend and became a distinguished British middle-distance runner of the 1960s. His defining achievement was becoming the first Welshman to run under 4 minutes for the mile, clocking 3:58.96 in 1965.
He was also the first Welshman to run under 1:50 for 880 yards (1961), and his 1:48.5 for 880 yards in 1964 ranked third-best in Britain that year. He set 13 Welsh records across the 880 yards, mile, and metric equivalents throughout his career.
Harris represented Britain at the 1962 Belgrade European Championships and competed at the 1962 Perth and 1966 Kingston Commonwealth Games. Despite leaving Wales at age five after the Second World War, he maintained strong Welsh connections throughout his athletic career.
