Biography
Steve Jones is regarded as one of Wales’ finest ever distance runners. He announced himself to the marathon world at the 1984 Chicago Marathon, winning in a world record time of 2:08:05 — defeating world champion Rob De Castella and Olympic champion Carlos Lopes in the process.
He improved his own mark to 2:07:13 at Chicago in 1985, a time that remains the Welsh and UK marathon record. He also won the London Marathon in 1985, and completed five victories from 18 marathon starts.
Beyond road racing, Jones won nine Welsh national cross-country titles and finished third at the 1984 World Cross-Country Championships. On the track he ran a Welsh 10,000m record of 27:39.14 and won bronze at the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in the same event. He was one of five inaugural inductees into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
