Biography
Steve Barry was born on 25 October 1950 and became one of Wales’ most distinguished race walkers. His greatest achievement came at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, where he won gold in the 30km walk — a victory that remains the last time a British male walker has won an international title.
He set seven British records across various walking distances and won the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year award. Barry established Welsh walking records between 10-30km that remained unbroken for nearly three decades after his retirement. He also competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
