The finest all-round exponent of the three heavy throwing events in Welsh athletics history. Won 19 Welsh titles including three trebles across shot, discus, and hammer, and Commonwealth bronze in the shot at Kuala Lumpur 1998.
Biography
Shaun Pickering was born in 1961 in Griffithstown, Gwent, and stood 1.97m — a giant by any measure, both physically and in terms of his achievements in Welsh throws history.
He was the British number one shot putter, competing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 1997 World Championships in Athens. He won bronze in the shot at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games and held Welsh records in the shot (for 16 years) and hammer (for 29 years). He won 19 Welsh titles in total, including three trebles across all three throwing events, and set 17 Welsh records.
His father Ron was a Welsh national coach and BBC commentator, his mother Jean was an Olympic bronze medallist, and his godfather was Olympic gold medallist Lynn Davies.
