Biography
Ron Jones was born in Cwmaman and competed for Cardiff’s Birchgrove Harriers, establishing himself as one of Wales’ finest sprinters. He won 12 Welsh sprint titles between 1956 and 1970 and held the Welsh automatic-timed 100m record for 27 years after retirement.
His finest international moment came as part of the British relay team that set a world 4 x 110 yards record in 1963. He was named British 100m champion in 1969 and captained the British athletics team at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, earning 31 British international vests across a career that included four Commonwealth Games, three European Championships, and two Olympic Games.
After sport, Jones built a distinguished career in football administration, serving as Chief Executive of Queens Park Rangers and the first paid Managing Director of a Football League Club at Cardiff City. He was appointed MBE in 2001.
