Biography
Roger Hackney, born in Swansea, is the holder of the Welsh steeplechase record — 8:18.91 set in 1988 — which ranks as the sixth-fastest British performance of all time. He competed at three Olympic Games: Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984 (reaching the final), and Seoul 1988.
He won silver at the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and finished fifth at the 1983 World Championships in Stockholm. A two-time AAA steeplechase champion, he also won the Welsh cross-country championship in 1982 and was competitive across the 1,500m, 5,000m, and mile.
Only Colin Jackson and Christian Malcolm appeared at more Olympic Games than Hackney’s three.
