Won double bronze at the 1987 World and European Indoor 60m hurdles championships. Olympic semi-finalist in 1984 and six-time Welsh champion. Later earned 17 caps for Wales in rugby union.
Biography
Nigel Walker was among Wales’ finest high hurdlers, with a personal best of 13.51 seconds in the 110m hurdles ranking third among all Welsh athletes in the event. He achieved double bronze medals at the 1987 World and European Indoor 60m hurdles championships.
He competed as a semi-finalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and won six Welsh senior hurdles titles, having previously won Welsh Schools titles in 1979 and three consecutive Welsh under-20 titles from 1980.
After retiring from athletics, Walker made a remarkable transition to rugby union, earning 17 caps for Wales and scoring 12 tries. He later became a distinguished sports administrator, serving as Executive Director of Rugby at the WRU, National Director at the English Institute of Sport (2018-2021), and head of sport at BBC Wales.
