Biography
Neil Winter, born in Monmouthshire, became Wales’ youngest senior record holder in any event at age 15 when he cleared 5.01m in 1989. Over a six-year career he improved the Welsh record nine times, eventually reaching a personal best of 5.60m at age 21.
His most celebrated achievement came at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, where he won gold with a vault of 5.40m, setting a new Games record. He had also been UK champion in 1993, and held British records at Under-13, Under-17, and Under-20 levels.
Winter competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics before a series of injuries — including a dislocated shoulder, Achilles problems, and knee surgery — forced his retirement at just 22 years of age.
