Won Olympic gold in the 4x400m relay at Antwerp 1920, alongside fellow Welsh inductee Cecil Griffiths. A multi-sport Cambridge Blue who later became an eminent surgeon.
Biography
John (Jack) Ainsworth-Davis was born in Aberystwyth in 1895 and won Olympic gold as part of Britain’s 4 x 400m relay team at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics — alongside fellow Welsh Hall of Fame inductee Cecil Griffiths. He finished fifth individually in the 400m.
He was a multi-sport athlete at Christ College Cambridge, earning colours in rugby and football in addition to his athletics Blues. He went on to earn British international vests.
Ainsworth-Davis pursued a distinguished medical career, becoming an eminent urological surgeon and secretary of the Royal Society of Medicine. During the Second World War he served as head of surgery at RAF Hospital Cosford with the rank of Wing Commander. He died on 3 January 1976, aged 80, and was posthumously inducted into Welsh Athletics’ Hall of Fame in 2024.
