Biography
Doug Turner, born in Newport, achieved his greatest success at the 1998 Budapest European Championships, winning silver in the 200m in 20.89 seconds.
He set two Welsh 200m records across his career, with a personal best of 20.43 seconds. He contributed a 45.1-second relay leg to Wales’s bronze medal-winning 4 x 400m relay team at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. He won three Welsh 200m titles between 1995 and 2001, with his 2001 winning time of 20.54 seconds remaining the fastest in the championship’s history.
He continued competing into his mid-thirties, ranking as Britain’s fourth-best 200m runner at age 35. He trained alongside Christian Malcolm and Jamie Baulch under coach Jock Anderson.
