The most accomplished Welsh decathlete in history. Set eight British and 16 Welsh records, won Commonwealth Games silver at Kingston 1966, and set a Commonwealth record of 7,451 points.
Biography
Clive Longe was born in Guyana and developed into a world-class decathlete while stationed at RAF St Athan in Wales, where sports instructor Hywel Williams recognised and nurtured his potential.
He set eight British records and 16 Welsh records across his career. His greatest competitive result was winning silver at the 1966 Kingston Commonwealth Games, and he set a Commonwealth record of 7,451 points in West Germany. He also competed at the 1966 European Championships in Budapest, finishing ninth.
Beyond the decathlon, he won both the shot and discus at the 1966 Welsh Championships. He became Welsh decathlon champion in 1964 and went on to serve as Bermuda’s national athletics coach. He died in 1986 and was posthumously inducted into Welsh Athletics’ Hall of Fame in 2024.
