The first Welshman to win the AAA 440 yards hurdles title (1955). Won Commonwealth bronze at Vancouver 1954 and lowered the Welsh 400m hurdles record eight times across his career.
Biography
Born in Taffs Well, Bob Shaw became a distinguished Welsh hurdler who began winning Welsh titles while still a teenager at Manchester Grammar School. He went on to win six Welsh senior titles across the high hurdles and 440 yard hurdles.
In 1955 he became the first Welshman to win the AAA 440 yards hurdles title with a time of 52.2 seconds. At the 1954 Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver he won bronze in the event with a Welsh record of 53.3 seconds. He won four Oxford University athletics Blues and captained the Welsh athletics team at the 1958 Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff.
Shaw lowered the Welsh 400m hurdles record eight times during his career, with his 1956 mark of 51.7 seconds set in Budapest remaining unbeaten until 1974.
