Biography
Berwyn Jones was a Welsh sprinter from Rhymney who achieved world-class status in the early 1960s. His greatest moment came as part of the Anglo-Welsh relay team that equalled the world 4 x 110 yards record at White City, London, in 1963 — defeating a USA squad that included Olympic champion Bob Hayes.
That same year he became British 100 yards champion and equalled the British 100m record with 10.3 seconds in Budapest. He won nine British vests and set eight Welsh records in the sprint events.
At the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games and European Championships in Belgrade, he earned bronze medals as part of relay teams. Despite his athletic promise, Jones signed professional terms with Wakefield Trinity Rugby League Club in April 1964, earning three Great Britain rugby league caps before retiring in 1970. He passed away in January 2007.
